As yoga teachers and practitioners, we understand the significance of mindfulness. We can begin mindfully setting New Year’s intentions by deeply reflecting on the past year. What lessons have been learned? What areas of life need nurturing and attention?
Beginning intention setting with a mindful review of the past sets the stage for authentic and meaningful intentions. Your process of reflection can take many forms—you may choose to sit in meditation, journal, or take a long walk through nature while thinking through the past year. However you choose to reflect, try thinking through the following thought-provoking questions to guide you in creating meaningful intentions:
“What brings me joy, both on and off the mat?”
“In what areas of your life do I seek growth and transformation?”

You may be familiar with the concept of Sankalpa—a Sanskrit term translating to “heartfelt resolve.” You can reflect on and infuse your New Year’s intentions with the power of Sankalpa by aligning your intention with the deepest desires of your heart. This practice strengthens the commitment to the intention and can connect you to your innermost aspirations.
